The matter of domestic violence was more or less the hardest thing in composing the first installment of the Death of a Russian Bride document because it is the matter which, in my view, is the most altered to fit the account told by opponents of mail-order bride industry.
What I did was to go as far as I could to crawl back up the knowledge path. There was surprisingly not much evidence that I could trace that appeared to be at all definitive.

The document that I referenced in the Death of a Russian Bride paper is as far back up the path as I could go and was the most convincing, it is a report to Congress with reference to International Marriage Organizations (IMOs). This is the part of my report that links to the document: Death of a Russian Bride

There is hefty disparity in the information quoted from one source to another on the subject of domestic violence in mail order bride marriages. In the report to congress that I have referenced, the authors remark that because of the paucity of women caught up in the Mail Order Bride channel to the U.S.A who claimed domestic violence or abuse as a grounds to apply for self-adjustment of their status was so low that a statistically authenticated sample was quite difficult to find. The report’s authors employ estimates for much of the work, but have been meticulous to corroborate the estimates, if necessary, with those who are likely to have some grip on the issues based on their work.

Check from the foot of page 15 of the report to see estimates of abuse, the sources and the methodology. You can see that the best estimate for the self-adjusting cases of MOB women who had documented abuses against them was a tiny 1%. Using other methods to track and estimate the level of abuse among claimants for self-adjustment the corresponding figures were found to be in no case higher than 1%.

From other sources there seems to be a difference in the incidence of abuse where the husband and wife are from the same ethnic group and the woman has not been brought to the U.S.A as a traditional mail order bride however it certainly seems to fit the case of the groups opposed to men marrying foreign women to mox the groups of women together.

The report to Congress includes, as an appendix, a study commissioned by the INS which contains a suggestion, without any evidence, of abuse among couples in which one American man has imported a foreign bride is likely to be higher than for the general population. The paper suggests a figure of 7% per annum for domestic abuse within the general population in the U.S..

PostHeaderIcon Russian Bride Fraud: Some Opinions

International Marriages Agencies Are Finished

If you are looking for a mail order bride then you need to read the following article about fraud that men often find when they look online for a online bride.

Much is talked with reference to fraud in the mail order bride business, international dating, Russian bride business, no matter what we decide to label it.

I’ve been researching this topic for a while, and want to share some opinions on the question of mail-order bride agencies and how the agencies and their women clients trick men, specifically American men.

Pareto is the man behind the well-known 80/20 maxim which suggests that, for example, 80% of profits derive from just 20% of a concern’s customers. This maxim seems to be valid in nearly all areas where there is a distribution, including from what can be gathered from visble sources, the Mail Order Bride business. In this example I define a Pareto girl as one of the top 20% of female agency clients who pick up nearly all the communications from American men looking for a Russian wife. A ’shelf’ girl on the other hand, is one of many that most likely pick up almost no contacts at all. We see, again from what we read, see and have been told, that there is a long roster of women who are left on the shelf without any email whatever.

It is this insight that is really instructive as regards the environment of the International Marriage Bureau industry as with some rather simple calculations, one can start to create an understanding of how active the best earning girls (or profiles) might be and why it is that the busiest girls (or their profiles) can be seen as probably not what for the most part Americans are looking for; in truth the profiles may not belong to women sincerely in search of a foreign husband at all.

I did some calculations to illustrate this a while in the past on a now dead forum called RWG (Russian Women Guide). It also illustrates why it is that the best standing profiles are probably not being dealt with by the girls themselves, there in simple terms is not time for them to do it.

A Pareto girl is not automatically a scammer, they could look for a man, probably an American, but she can sure as hell afford to be picky and if the agency is actually getting many visitors, rather than men who are only paying to contact women, she’s probably too busy dealing with visiting guys to have much in the way of a conventional job. Her ‘work’ is the inward visitors!

Unhappily a ’shelf girl’ is different, she gets very little contact from male clients and each one have got to be jealously guarded and painstakingly looked after. The upside for the guys, is that she will nurture any visiting guys most carefully and, if genuinely wanting to depart her own country, will be careful in the extreme to not put a foot wrong, but there’s a hitch! If she is so driven to connect with a man and she is so seldom contacted, it follows that it is also somewhat natural that she will do what it takes to take full advantage of the chance, even as far as marrying the wrong chap, just since he is the only man. She can’t afford to be too fussy.

Let us take an example, Hot Russian Brides told us earlier in 2005 that the average chap wrote perhaps 20 emails a month, it was their grounds for setting their free limit of 30 messages per month. They have in their database, approximately 16,500 women. I do not know how many guys they have, but review what they told us concerning their costs and what we can distinguish from their monthly expenses, I’m disposed to bet that they had, in 2005, not far off from 2,000 paying subscribers and that they could easily deal with loads more. I also believe that, looking at their website, they focus on letter-writers (keyboard Romeos), not upon the very rare men who in reality find time for a visit to be acquainted with a female in Russia or Ukraine, but that is another affair.
At the levels which applied in 2005 they held that they were not making money, so I imagine that some estimates of the volume for a moneymaking business could increase twofold?
Let’s also presuppose that Mr Average contacts, say, three profiles/women. That means 40,000 e-mails sent to 16,500 women. Using the 80/20 maxim, we have 3300 women who split 10,400 e-mails on the top and 13,200 women sharing 2600 contacts. If each lady has on average 7 letters per month from any male acquaintance, this means that just 3% of the bottom slice have any letters in a given month, ie more or less 400 women. These women are going to battle tooth and nail to get e-mail from her local agency in Ukraine or Russia and keep the contact going.
We can start to appreciate where the stories about women giving gifts to agency managers come from eh?

“But what about the top slice, the lucky 20%. Will Pareto’s rule apply here as well?” Probably yes, but assumptions can get a little stretched and there is obviously a continuum, not an entirely separate group, but go with the figures for a moment, it can be fun!

As, 3300 women have 10,400 messages, if Pareto still working hard, just 660 women get 8,320 emails each month, 12 items per month from two boys, and of course those guys come and go from Hot Russian Brides as the months pass, yet the business was not yet, in 2005, making money. Imagine the number of introductory messages these girls get!
How can an agency NOT do anything to the service those busy letter writers?

Just remember that Hot Russian Brides and similar websites are simply aggregators of profiles from hundreds, maybe thousands, of small agencies scattered across Russia and Ukraine, each of these girls may well be on the list of several of these aggregators – Elena’s Models, A Foreign Affair, AnatasiaWeb all being supplied with profiles from the girls’ local agencies. How can an attractive girl (or her profile) successfully deal with input from, for example, A Foreign Affair, Russian Love Match, HRB, Anastasia and Confidential Connections without even thinking of the Russian sites like Damochka, Yandex and Mail.ru.

The numbers I used previously were based on information provided by Elena’s Models and U.S. Immigration statistics and provided an even more extreme picture of the situation. But we can see that there are at least two groups of women to be aware of the agencies.
It is not possible to simply say that the less popular women will be a safer bet. To a man with something concrete to offer, can the opposite could well be true, just as long as he can convince one of these delights to actually start a real correspondence and subsequent relationship with him. The problem is, in reality, to get a real woman to actually read the e-mails sent to her and provoke a response.

PostHeaderIcon Death Of The Russian Bride Business

This article is about the Death of the Russian Bride Business and the changes that are going to be forced upon it. If you are interested in online dating the following article is for you!

I have been thinking regarding the form that the Russian Bride (mail order bride) business might assume. Feedback on numerous forums over the past few weeks since launch of the first chapter of the Death of a Russian Bride information has been fascinating.

It is obvious that the clientele of many of the Mail Order Bride businesses are not very pleased with what they at present have.
I read numerous forum posts along the lines that pretty much anything that put the large aggregator mail order bride/international marriage bureau sites out of business would only be a good thing, even at the price of more regulation on the end user clients themselves. This suggested a very robust reaction against present business models.

Some readers felt that some companies have been cynically using IMBRA regulations to their benefit to stop people from sharing their private contact information in order to continue to obtain the utmost revenue out of each client. The fact that their customers will now be required to make available background information about marriages and criminal records will likely hinder the great majority of Keyboard Romeos (men who want to be in touch but never actually meet the Russian women they contact) from getting involved with the international marriage business at all. This can be seen as a risk to the high revenue and profit communication schemes run by some companies. The suggestion was made that some businesses are in simple terms exploiting Russian and other nationality women in a cynical fashion by putting these keyboard Romeos in contact with women seeking a husband without consideration of the intention of marriage at all.

I have to say that I do not agree that all agencies are as cynical as has been suggested. I have met with folks in the business who recognise that Keyboard Romeos exist but who honestly want to see happy marriages involving their American gentleman and Russian lady clients.

Removing the ‘broker’ aspect from these international relationships was seen as a good thing by many people. The idea is that agencies ought to go back to being the providers of travel services, support, translation and other amenities linked to the outcome of a relationship. Any company with a vested concern in not seeing a favorable outcome – wedlock, seems to need to be kept out of the loop.

I read suggestions that genuine marriage/introduction agencies in local cities in Russia and Ukraine could without difficulty avoid IMBRA and state level regulations could easily get around them if they chose. All these firms ought to do, they suggest, is to simply have all the girls post their profiles to a Facebook group, for example ‘Single Kiev Girls Looking for Love’ and permit direct interaction between both parties and then generate turnover from the other services that they can offer such as translation, English education, accommodation, transfers, and the like. And all the stuff agencies used to do before their foremost impetus became a dollar per letter or minute chat. Personally I can grasp that using the functionality of a social networking site is worthwhile but I have doubts that such a scheme would suffice to satisfy the requirements of a fully active IMBRA.

This was always a niche business for the legitimate men and women involved, the national online dating business is much larger than the current model of international online dating. Much of the quandary faced by current businesses in the IMB niche has come about as the outcome of cynical attempts to maximise revenues from the paying customers, chiefly American, men, I absolutely agree with the estimate that the industry has brought this state of affairs upon itself.

Unfortunately, I know of honorable businesses in the mail order bride business who have gone out of business because of their reluctance to comply with the shady business practices of the email factories and the enthusiasm of crooked entrepreneurs to set themselves up to profit from lonesome men. We should not disregard though the men who owing to their own greed have allowed themselves to be deluded by fantasies of agreeable, pliant and attractive women dreaming of marrying relatively nondescript men in another country.

Untold heartaches and tears have been cried by both men and women through some practices of some large scale operators and they have dragged all the business into dishonor, the quicker these businesses close down the better.
